Verizon Center Nominated for Arena of the Year
Leading Industry Trade Publication Lists Venue
As One of Eight Nominees for 2007
Pollstar, the leading trade publication for the entertainment
industry, lists Verizon Center as one of eight arenas nominated
for the coveted title of Arena of the Year for 2007.
“To be celebrating our tenth anniversary as a building and
to be nominated for Arena of the Year in the same season is phenomenal,”
says Chairman of Washington Sports & Entertainment Abe Pollin.
“It’s a great feeling to be recognized by leading professionals
in the concert industry and to be nominated alongside seven other
stellar arenas throughout the country.”
Nominees for the category of Arena of the Year are voted on by
an exclusive group of 30 concert industry professionals. Pollstar
asks the select group of individuals to consider nominations for
specific categories for the annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards.
A minimum of two members from the exclusive group must select the
same nominee to be considered for the award. Ballots are then provided
to subscribers of Pollstar magazine to vote for the award winners
in each category.
The nominees for 2007 Arena of the Year are:
- Air Canada Centre, Toronto, ON
- Honda Center, Anaheim, CA
- HP Pavilion at San Jose, San Jose, CA
- Madison Square Garden, New York, NY
- Sommet Center, Nashville, TN
- Staples Center, Los Angeles, CA
- Verizon Center, Washington, D.C.
- Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul, MN
Last year’s winner for Arena of the Year was Madison Square
Garden in New York. This year’s award winners will be announced
at the 19th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards on February
7 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
Verizon Center, a 20,000-seat venue in downtown Washington, D.C.,
is celebrating its tenth anniversary with 24 million in attendance
and over 2,070 world-class sporting events, concerts and family
shows having come through its doors since 1997. Managed by Washington
Sports & Entertainment, the venue is home to the NBA’s
Washington Wizards, the NHL’s Washington Capitals, the WNBA’s
Washington Mystics, and the NCAA’s Georgetown Hoyas Men’s
Basketball team. Boasting an average of 220 events per year, Verizon
Center has spurred $6.2 billion in redevelopment in the surrounding
neighborhood, and generated $76 million in taxes for the District
of Columbia.
